About Vallauris - Golfe-Juan

A few kilometres from Golfe-Juan lies Vallauris, known as the ‘ceramic capital’ of France and of the world. Vallauris has been a centre for pottery since the Roman times and was the home to Picasso in the early 1950s. Picasso produced more than two thousand pieces of pottery, many of which can still be seen in the Picasso museum on Place de la Liberation. The museum is housed in a priory built by the monks from the Îles de Lérins who used to control the village.

Just next to the museum is a small chapel, decorated by Picasso in 1952 with his famous “War and Peace” fresco. The Rue Clemenceau is the centre of the pottery industry in Vallauris with over 200 potters. Most of the workshops have shops selling a large variety of ceramics. It is often possible to visit workshops and see the pots being made.Naturally you can also purchase pots and all kind of arts and crafts.

The castle museum hosts the International Biennial of Ceramic Arts. You must not miss the spectacle of the Provençal market. Wander around the little streets to discover the artists' workshops, the ceramic artists, the olive wood carving, glassworKs, and the local perfume creators. Enjoy your visit!!
